Solidarity Nightmare

A group of 25 people reserved a table on Saturday, May 3rd at 6:30 p.m. They arrived one hour late, all adorned with watermelon stamps on their faces and many of them wearing the Palestinian Kufiyah. They refused to eat together family-style dinner, we tried to explain to them it is our restaurant policy, clearly stated on our reservation and policy pages. chef Tamam came out of the kitchen to talk to them and explain the benefits of eating together. She even offered them a $10 discount per person as an incentive. They refused and insulted chef Tamam. Nonetheless, Tamam agreed to make them 25 individual orders. while eating they felt happy, started singing, ululating loudly and drumming on the dining tables. Then the bill came and things went crazy again. Why did we add 20% tip on the bill? Again, because on our reservations and policy pages, we clearly state that for parties of 10 guests or more, 20% tip is automatically added. Needless to say, the group spent over 4 hours dining at the restaurant. The next morning, some of them went online and started writing negative Google reviews.

We just want to emphasize the following:
Wearing Palestinian Kufiyah to the restaurant is very much appreciated but should not translate to entitlement leading to harassment of kitchen and staff. Solidarity work is a work of principles; it is not some accessory that we wear for an occasion . What solidarity can a group of people offer when they can’t share a meal together? What type of solidarity is that when it stops working because of 20% tip on the bill? What type of solidarity are you showing at Tamam: Fine Palestinian Cuisine when you insult Tamam herself in person? This is the kind of solidarity that we certainly don’t need and don’t want.

Saturday April 12, 2025. Another day of distributing over 200 platters of baked fatayer to displaced refugees in Karameh camp in Khan Yunis. Our community of volunteers did an amazing job given the conditions. But they were able to put a smile on many faces. The documentation videos they sent us are both, heartbreaking and heartwarming. We will keep working as long as we can to provide whatever we can. The least we can do. On Mother’s Day, May 11, in collaboration with various wonderful people and organizations in BC, we will be holding a big fundraiser event that includes music, fashion and food bringing together Palestinian, Indigenous and Canadian artists to salute and pay respect to mothers in Gaza. If there is well there is a way. Last week, we were able to fund with your donations, the distribution of fatayer and other baked goodies for displaced people in Khan Yunis.
This video that documents the event was sent to us from Gaza by the same people who organized the event. We didn’t do any editing, we just shortened the length of it because it is over 5 minutes. If this video shows us anything, it shows that despite the dire situation, and the hopeless world around them, Gazans are kind, warm and resilient people whose sense of belonging is stronger than any military in the world.

We had the most meaningful day yesterday, we gathe

We had the most meaningful day yesterday, we gathered together, friends and allies and spent the day making Eid cookies at our restaurant. We finished baking around 3:00 pm, by 5:00 pm everything was gone. We raised $3195 which will be sent to Gaza immediately through friends to provide hot meals and drinking water. We are happy to be able to provide safe space for our community to observe the saddest Eid, in a meaningful way.

We live in dark times. Imagine that the genocide was resumed to bring the bloodthirsty right wing lunatic Ben Gvir, back to the government so that war criminal Netanyahu stays in power and doesn’t face his criminality in a court of law. We are small restaurant that opens very limited hours, however, we go through 100 romaine hearts, per week, that’s 400 hearts a month. Almost all restaurants in BC use lettuce. Imagine how much demand there is. The problem is that it is really difficult to find romaine hearts grown in Canada. Yesterday we were able to fund with your donations, the distribution of fresh water and Ramadan food baskets for hundreds of families in Northern Gaza. Now that Israel is using water and food to punish two million people in Gaza, we can’t stay silent, even though the killing machine is getting more aggressive and more genocidal with the support of the radical right wing lunatics in the WH. At the same time we are working with a group of activists, doctors and medical engineers to provide prosthetic limbs for amputees especially children.
